If you’ve been to the store lately – any store – then you know that Christmas is just around the corner. And with holiday lights and decorations starting to appear before we’ve even made it to Thanksgiving Dinner, now is the time to start planning your schedule with holiday events.

From shopping events that feature local artisans to ongoing holiday festivals, Richmond offers countless ways to get in the holiday spirit. Whatever your interests, we encourage you to get out there and experience all that the Richmond area has to offer this holiday season – and beyond!

With that in mind, we’ve put together an extensive list of some of the top events in the area, as well as a few that, maybe, you’ve never heard of until now.

A Tuna Christmas

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” Holiday Tree Lighting

Westchester Commons

Start the Christmas season in style at Westchester Commons. As the tree is lit on Westchester Commons’ Main Street, the talented kids from School of Rock will ring in the season with their own special twist on holiday classics; The House of Prayer will host their famous hot chocolate bar and a s’more bar; The Ski Center will provide s’mores and face painting; and, of course, Santa will make an appearance. The first 250 kids in attendance will receive a free light-up snowflake – and you never know, you might just see some “magical” snow yourself! Be sure to join in for this fun, free holiday event!

Maymont Mansion Holiday Tours

See the Dooley Mansion decked out for a true Victorian Holiday with beautiful trimmings on the 12-foot Christmas tree, the opulent dining room set for a feast, evergreen decorations and lavish gifts. In the Belowstairs area, preparations will be underway to make the Dooleys’ first Christmas in their new home special for their family and friends. Illuminate Light Show & Santa’s Village

Illuminate Light Show is a unique, six-week celebration of Christmas lights and music. Guests tune their car radio to enjoy over a mile of dancing, sparkling choreographed lights, complete with dazzling tunnels and laughing Santas. After the light show, guests may visit Santa’s Village for children’s activities, shopping and holiday entertainment. The lights shine brightly for guests nightly from 5:30 p.m until 10:00 p.m., including holidays, and are enjoyed from the cozy comfort of a vehicle.

52nd Annual Craft and Design Show

Science Museum of Virginia

Hosted by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond along with local sponsors, this annual event provides a breathtaking display of contemporary crafts in a intimate, museum-quality setting. The show has earned national accolades for its quality of work and sees thousands of visitors each year. See more than 60 vendors vie for awards in ceramics, precious metals, glass, wood and recycled materials, contemporary design, innovative use of traditional craft materials and fiber. The annual GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a holiday tradition for many in the area, but it’s also a beautiful winter event, regardless of how you celebrate the holidays. Featuring more than half-a-million twinkling lights, hand-crafted botanical decorations, model trains, holiday dinners, firepit with s’mores and hot chocolate (for purchase), GardenFest offers ongoing nightly family activities from November 25 until January 9, 2017. This year’s theme, “Living Color,” explores how the world’s kaleidoscope of colors speaks to us, impacts nature and influences culture.

Tree Lighting at the Jefferson Hotel

The Jefferson Hotel is beautiful any time of the year – but the holidays highlight the elegance of this historic hotel in a special way. Join family and friends at The Jefferson just after Thanksgiving for the 30th annual lighting of the Christmas tree. The event will begin with holiday musical performances at 5pm, followed by the tree lighting at 5:45pm, which includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. After the event, you are invited to the Empire Ballroom for complimentary refreshments and a first look at the annual Gingerbread Display. Holiday decorations at the Jefferson will be on display from November 28, 2016 until January 1, 2017. Don’t miss this dazzling display!

A Colonial Christmas

Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

“A Colonial Christmas” at Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown offers a glimpse of 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions with special tours and interpretive programs.

The Jamestowne Settlement will feature a daily orientation tours of the museum’s outdoor living-history where visitors will learn about Jamestown colony’s early years as well as the English colonists’ Christmas at sea in December 1606 and the Powhatan Indian hospitality shown to Captain John Smith’s trading party in 1608 during a winter storm.

On December 23-31, visitors can experience riddles and revelry by the Lord of Misrule, “grand captain of all mischief.”  Throughout the month, historical interpreters will discuss the English colonists’ Christmas at sea aboard the re-created ship Susan Constant and, in the re-created Powhatan Indian village, present demonstrations on typical winter activities, including food preservation and hunting tools and techniques.

At the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown, you will hear accounts of Christmas and winter in military encampments during the American Revolution and glimpse holiday preparations on a Revolution-period farm.

33rd Annual Dominion Christmas Parade

Science Museum of Virginia (parade starting point)

The favorite holiday tradition brings in more than 100,000 spectators every year from all over Virginia. The parade will start at the Science Museum of Virginia and make its way through the city with festive floats, marching bands, giant helium balloons, and, of course, Santa! Light Up The Tracks

Hanover Arts and Activities Center

Help to turn Ashland into a winter wonderland at their annual grand illumination event, Light Up The Tracks. A Grand Illumination ceremony will be followed by a choral recital at the Hanover Arts & Activities Center. Then, from December 3rd through New Year’s Day, trackside homes, businesses and Randolph-Macon College will be strung with twinkling white lights from one end of town to the other. At the center of town, where Rt. 54 crosses the tracks, a 20′ community tree will be adorned with colored lights and decorations.

CarMax Tacky Light Run

Midlothian
