Special Olympics Virginia’s Summer Games are more than a sports competition; they are a looking glass, an example to everyone of how people with intellectual disabilities can and should be included in all aspects of their communities. Special Olympics is a unified movement, integrating people with intellectual disabilities into everything we do.
Come take a “look” this June at our largest annual competition, Summer Games, during which 1500 athletes with and without disabilities will go for gold, and are certain to inspire you and your family! Then take what you see at Special Olympics back into your homes, your places of business and your community. When we are unified, we are stronger, more just and more joyful – let’s make these changes together.
You’re invited to Cheer Your Heart Out-SIDE June 9 at the Summer Games Opening Ceremony, which will be held outside at University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium. We’re excited to welcome 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in hurdles, Kelly Brinkley. We’ll also cheer for the hundreds of Law Enforcement Torch Run officers who will run the last leg of their 2000-mile journey with the Flame of Hope into the Stadium to light the Olympic Cauldron, to be followed by fireworks!
Saturday, June 10, fans can join us for an hour or all day at Robins Stadium for some great outdoor track & field action. Cheering is free and family-friendly, and also features our amazing Olympic Town, where all are welcome to enjoy fun activities like Bingo, a gaming trailer, shows by Mad Science and face painting. Not to mention, fans can enjoy free popcorn and snow cones from Enterprise, and free ice cream sandwiches from Southland Dairy.
Summer Games also is home to Special Olympics Virginia’s Healthy Athletes screening program where athletes and health ambassadors from across the state will receive FREE on-site care thanks to hundreds of medical students, professionals and community volunteers.
