Resource Guide to Donations in Richmond

Resource Guide for Donations in RichmondWe have many reasons to be grateful for living in the Richmond area. For many of us, there is access to ample housing, beautiful parks, great schools and a wealth of resources.  Unfortunately, not everyone in Richmond has the same experience and need help through donations.

In fact, did you know that in 2016, Richmond had the second highest poverty rates in the state of Virginia? According to a September 2016 article published in the Richmond Times Dispatch, “one in four Richmond residents lived in poverty in 2015” (based on U.S. Census Bureau data).

When you think about it, those are pretty startling numbers. But another one of the benefits of living in an area like Richmond, is that at the end of the day, we’re just one big small town. Richmonders have a long tradition of coming together, as neighbors and communities. Proof of this lies in the wide array of charities, outreach programs, shelters, clothing closets, thrift shops, and food banks that abound throughout the city and surrounding counties.

With summer around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you and your family can start giving back. Take advantage of increased “family time” and start cleaning out those closets, paring down your household clutter, emptying unwanted or outgrown items in the garage and trimming down the toy boxes – all the while knowing that you can repurpose these things into treasures for families in need.

Donating to local charities not only helps you clear the clutter in your home, it also presents the perfect opportunity to teach your children how to recognize those less fortunate and find ways to make a difference in the world. And with tax benefits for almost all donations, donating is a win-win for everyone.

We’ve put together a list of some of the area’s most popular and well-established charities and outreach programs to help you find the right place for your donations. Whatever cause or charity that is near and dear to your heart, chances are you can find an organization that will allow you to contribute unused or unwanted clothing and goods from your own home – or provide opportunities to donate new items. And as always, if you know of any reputable organizations or donation sites that we may have left off this list, let us know. Send us an email at [email protected] and we’ll see if we can get it added!
