4th of July Resource GuideWith the 4th of July holiday just around the corner, now is a good time to start making plans. Whether you’re looking for elaborate fireworks, family-friendly festivals, living history, or small-town gatherings, Richmond and the surrounding areas are loaded with fun-filled events starting the weekend of July 1 and 2 and carrying through until Tuesday, July 4.

We’ve put together a list of local and regional events that will help you celebrate this Fourth of July like never before. Head out for a tried and true Independence Day tradition or start a new one with friends and family. Find a fourth of July getaway or stay close to home. Whatever your preference, we’ve got something for you. Most events listed are with an hour or less of the city of Richmond, but a few are within a couple hours to give you plenty of variety and options.

Get your Fourth of July party started early with the annual Urbanna Independence Day Celebration. Festivities will be held at the beautiful Urbanna Town Marina and will begin with a boat parade contest featuring awards for the most patriotic decorations. There will be music, food, games and fun at the marina, or if you come by boat, feel free to dock and watch the spectacular fireworks display beginning at dark. There will be charter and rental boats available. Rain date July 3.

Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser

Light up the lake with the Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser. The event will be held at Parkway Marina and features an evening of family fun, including live music by The Worx, the YMCA Kids’ Zone, The Parkway Marina Carousel, and a fireworks spectacular over the lake to close out the festivities. Colonial Heights July 4th Fireworks Display

The City of Colonial Heights will sponsor a fireworks display on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 in the vicinity of Charles Dimmock Parkway in Colonial Heights.  Viewing for the fireworks will be off Interstate 95, Exit 53 or 54 in the Southgate Square/Wal-Mart Area. Bring blankets and/or lawn chairs.  Please note that Roslyn Landing Park will be closed from sunrise on the day of the fireworks display until the following day. No vehicles or people are allowed in the park during this time.

Fireworks on the James Paddle Tour (with RVA Paddlesports)

See your Fourth of July fireworks from the James River. RVA Paddlesports’ special Fireworks on the James Paddle Tour takes you down the James in rafts and includes a stop for dinner at a deserted island about halfway down the river. There, you can relax on a sandy beach, cool down in the river, or cozy up next to a fire. Dinner includes fresh fruit, hot dogs, and s’mores, with both vegetarian and chicken options from local restaurant, Goatocado. The fireworks (at Dogwood Dell) will begin after dark, then once the smoke clears, you’ll set out under the moon and stars to paddle the remaining stretch of river. The tour ends around 10pm.

Fourth at the Fort

Celebrate your independence at Fort Lee’s annual Fourth at the Fort celebration on Tuesday, July 4 at Williams Stadium. The events begins at 5 p.m., with music, food and the KidZone (inflatables and games for the kids). The 392d Army Band will perform a rousing set of patriotic standards at 5:15 p.m, followed by country music singer/songwriter, Jackie Lee at 6:45 p.m. Maddie & Tae, the country music duo behind the chart-topping hit, “Girl In A Country Song,” will take the stage at 8:00 p.m. Our spectacular firework show will begin at 9:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks and festivities at Dogwood Dell. This long-standing Richmond tradition is part of the annual Festival of the Arts and features performances by the City Dance Theatre and the Richmond Concert Band with fireworks kicking off at dusk. If you can’t make it to the park, but still want to see the fireworks, be sure to find viewing spots along the James River and on Riverside Drive. Blankets and chairs are recommended.

Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death July 4th Reenactment

Watch as founding fathers Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and others engage in the debates and arguments that made up the Second Convention of March 1775 and led to Patrick Henry’s timeless “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” speech. Held at the historic St. John’s Church, this special July 4th performance will include a reading of the Declaration of Independence in honor of Independence Day.

Time: 10:45am – 12:15pm and 1pm – 2:30pm

July 4th at Monticello

Celebrate “the great birthday of our republic” and join the 55th Annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony at Monticello this fourth of July. In homage to Mr. Jefferson, who opened the President’s House to the public on July 4th, there will be free Jeffersonian Open House walk-through tours from 11:15am to 1pm following the ceremony. House tour reservations are first-come, first-served.

Lees and Independence Family Fun Festival

Don’t miss the fun and festivities at Stratford Hall’s annual Lees and Independence Family Fun Festival. This free event features a huge array of family-friendly activities, including a scavenger hunt, free caricature drawings, barrel train rides, miniature animals presented by the Westmoreland 4H Livestock Club, a Declaration of Independence tent, a “History and the Lees Family” tent, free admission to the Great House, fossil collecting on the beach and so much more. What better place to celebrate our independence than where it all began? Experience the 241st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown. Watch tactical drills and artillery demonstrations, take part in a variety of military exercises, enjoy music, see interpretive programs, and learn about the challenges that faced our nation’s founders, including those who signed the declaration. Red, White, and Lights at Crump Park

Join the Richmond Symphony at Crump Park/Meadow Farm for their annual Red, White and Lights Fourth of July Celebration. Star Spangled Celebration at King’s Dominion

King’s Dominion will be celebrating July 4th with special events from Friday, June 30, through Tuesday, July 4. Every day will feature all your favorite KD rides and activities, along with special live performances from local military bands and a dazzling extended fireworks show each evening. Plus, all active service members and veterans will receive FREE admission to the park as a thank you for their sacrifice and service. Be sure to bring a valid ID.

Time: 10:30am – 10pm

Yorktown 4th of July

Tuesday, July 4

Join the celebration in Yorktown and enjoy special events from morning until night. Start the morning with an 8k and 5k Run/Walk, followed by a parade on the water and live music. Later in the afternoon, there will be more live music, with fireworks over the York River to close out the evening. See a complete schedule of events here.

Time: Events begin at 8am with fireworks starting at 9:15pm
