Coco: A Movie Review – With a Twist

These days, it’s hard to find movies that are appropriate and entertaining for the whole family. Which is why many of us, as parents, have come to rely on Disney•Pixar. Time after time, Disney•Pixar has provided us with films that are family-friendly, funny, and all-around entertaining for everyone in the family, from the youngest spectators to the oldest. Their latest sensation, Coco, is no exception.

In Coco, Pixar Animation Studio’s 19th feature film, we learn the story of Miguel, a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family generations-old ban on music. As Miguel sets out to realize his dreams, he finds himself in the lively Land of the Dead. There he meets a clever old trickster, Héctor, and together they set off to uncover the mystery of his family’s history and to discover what led them to turn their backs on music in the first place.

Just as you would expect from the makers of hits like Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, and so many more, Coco delivers spellbinding animation, a captivating story, plenty of humor, and, of course, heartwarming lessons that can be understood and embraced by all ages.

But then again, we’re adults. What do we know about what kids really like and grasp in a film like “Coco”? That’s why we decided to do something a little different for this movie review. Instead of telling you what we think, we decided to go straight to the target audience. We asked an actual 11-year-old to tell us what she thought. What we found is that her appraisal of the film, and the values she took away, went even farther than our own. And when it comes to choosing movies for our kids to watch, it’s nice to know that sometimes, there’s even more value to a story than we picked up on ourselves.

So without further ado, here’s what she had to say:

A Review of  Coco

By Nora, age 11

Coco is an amazing movie full of fun. It helps little kids learn about the importance of listening and trusting those who love you. I assure you, by the end of the movie, you will fall in love with almost every character!

This is a great movie to learn about other people’s traditions and cultures. The movie has amazing songs and animation! It teaches kids of all ages the importance of family and helps everyone remember to stay true to yourself and to always follow your dream no matter how silly people say it is. It’s also perfect for animal lovers!

If you are looking for a movie to watch on family movie night, Coco is a perfect option. It’s wonderful and colorful and just altogether an amazing movie! I 100% recommend watching it. Even if you just need to keep your kids occupied while you get some “you” time, this movie is sure to do the trick.

Well, Nora, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

And while we’re clearly fans of this most recent Disney•Pixar blockbuster, we’re not alone. On March 4, 2018, Coco took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, as well as Best Original Song. These wins came on the heels of a 2018 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Motion Picture, but only after it topped the domestic box office over the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, became the highest grossing film of all time in Mexico, broke records in China, and earned critical acclaim from critics on nearly every media platform.

So to reiterate the words of our youngest movie critic-in-residence:

“If you are looking for a movie to watch on family movie night, Coco is a perfect option.”

Coco is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand and can also be found digitally on HD and 4K Ultra HD as well as on Movies Anywhere.
