Now that fall has finally arrived, the leaves are starting to change, and the scenic backdrops in Richmond are more beautiful than ever. Fall also brings with it the reminder of what’s on the horizon – namely, a slew of holidays. With that in mind, many of us have already started planning our holiday cards. (In other words, we’ve begun that frantic search for the perfect family photograph – or at least one in which no one is mid-meltdown and everyone is looking in the general direction of the camera.) Of course, without the right family photographers, that perfect photo can remain elusive.
If you’re like me, then the search for a holiday-card-worthy family photo is a greater challenge than it may seem. Searches through the phone and computer yield plenty of photos, but none that say “Happy holidays friends and family…we are a relatively functional family that doesn’t always have on weird hats, make funny faces and/or live at the beach/theme park/random vacation destination.” In other words, I usually find a rather severe lack of reasonable family shots in my personal collection.
Of course, holidays aren’t the only reason to have a good family photo. There’s also the situation that many of us find ourselves in after the birth of a child or two – we have plenty of photos, but they’ve all become a bit outdated as the craziness of life, work, and kids’ schedules takes over. I mean, newborn photos are great and all – unless that newborn is now in the third grade.
If you’re looking to update your family photos, whether for holiday cards or just to replace the school photos that are the only form of photographic evidence you have that your kids are no longer babies, then finding a good family photographer is a must. Fortunately, Richmond offers tons of options when it comes to capturing photos of our families at their best.
When many of us were kids, family photos were limited to a studio setting featuring mom and dad at the center with kids strategically arranged in a pyramid around them. But fortunately, times have changed and many photographers now provide the opportunity for our families to pose in more natural ways, both outdoors and/or in our own homes or favorite settings.
With fall serving as an ideal time for family photography, thanks to both the nicer weather and the idyllic outdoor backdrops, we’ve done a search for some of Richmond’s favorite family photographers. The following list includes photographers that offer:
- A range of setting options – including both indoor and outdoor settings
- A range of products and pricing – including many with mini-sessions available for fall and Christmas
- A creative portfolio that shows their experience and style
What you’ll find on our Best Family Photographers in Richmond list is a range of photographic styles, ensuring that you’ll find a photographer to suit your family’s personality. You’ll also find a wide range of options for pricing, packages, and products, allowing you to build a custom photographic experience that will truly capture the spirit of your family, while fitting into your family budget.

3. Jacki G Photography

Jacki is a photographer based in Richmond who focuses on maternity, birth, newborns, babies, and families. As a certified birth doula, her awareness and love of the family connection is evident in her work. She describes her style as “pure, organic and natural,” and while she does provide props, she prefers natural materials as opposed to larger, bright items that might take the focus away from a photo’s main subjects – namely, you and your family. One of the things we love most about Jacki is that she walks you through every step of the process, from offering tips about what to wear or NOT to wear, all the way through what to expect from the photography session itself. Ultimately, her goal is to make sure that your family’s personality and style is what shines through in the final product.
