The world is full of different kinds of people, different languages, and different cultures. But the one thing that is universal – the one thing guaranteed to make anyone smile – is the sound of a baby’s laughter. Not only is it the sweetest sound in the world, but it is infectious. But for a mother in Georgia, she had no idea just how sweet that sound could be until her 11-month old daughter got hearing aids for the first time and responded to her family’s voices with uncontrollable giggles.
Scarlet Benjamin was born three months premature and soon after birth, contracted a serious bacterial infection. During her stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, Scarlet required a medication that helped to fight the infection, but carried with it the unfortunate side effect of hearing loss. Carol Benjamin, Scarlet’s mother, knew her daughter’s hearing was impaired, but had no idea just how much Scarlet was missing until the day the family was able to have her fitted with hearing aids.
In today’s Share Saturdays video, watch as Scarlet hears the sound of her older sister’s voice clearly for the first time. And if that doesn’t get you, then just wait until she hears her mother’s voice and turns around! The unadulterated joy in her reaction to hearing the voice of her family, something most of us take for granted, is truly one of the sweetest sounds we’ve ever heard.
In a world where so much of what we hear on television and in social media is negative, the sounds of a baby’s uncontrollable laughter is something we all need to hear more often. So, we won’t judge if you do what we did and put this video on repeat – just be prepared for the tears!
