Family Friendly Halloween Events (and Not-So-Scary Events!) in Richmond 2019

Family-Friendly Halloween 2019If you’re anything like me, Halloween planning starts on November 1…the year before. In other words, I love Halloween and always try to make the most of it. However, with that being said, I’m not a guts and ghouls kind of girl, which means that a tamer, more family friendly Halloween is more my speed. This has turned out to be a good thing over the years as I’ve raised kids, because as it turns out, not many toddlers like having the living daylights scared out of them. That’s why it’s always good to have a list of local not-so-scary or family friendly Halloween events on hand. After all, raising kids is scary enough – the last thing you need is kids who won’t sleep with the light off until they go to college.

To help you plan your Halloween holiday, we’ve put together a list of some of the best family friendly Halloween and fall-themed activities in and around Richmond. These events cover a range of “scare” levels and include age recommendations so that you’re sure to find something that’s not-so-scary (or at least not-TOO-scary) for everyone in your crew – from toddlers to teens to adults. Best of all, because most of the following events let you and the kids dress up, you’ll be sure to get plenty of use out of those costumes that you’ve spent so long planning!

And while you’re looking for fright-free Halloween activities, be sure to check your local library! Many of libraries offer Halloween-themed story times, craft activities, and more. You can find Greater Richmond area library event calendars here:

Chesterfield County Libraries
Henrico County Libraries
Richmond City Libraries
Pamunkey Regional Libraries (includes Goochland, Hanover, King & Queen, and King William Counties)

In the meantime, take a look at these upcoming events in the Richmond and if there’s a fright-free (or not too scary) event that we might have overlooked, let us know at [email protected]!

Halloween on Hanover Avenue

October 31

Over the years, this annual trick-or-treat extravaganza has become the stuff of Halloween legend in the Richmond area. Even the Wall Street Journal has recognized Hanover Avenue as one of the nation’s best places to trick-or-treat. Every year, the residents of Hanover Avenue, from about the 1900 block to the 2200 block, try to outdo one another with decorations, effects and all-around Halloween fun. There will be parties. There will be music. There will be a pirate ship. But most importantly, there will be a festive atmosphere, more candy than your kids can carry, and sights and sounds that will entertain everyone in your family – from teens that are too cool to dress up anymore right down to your candy-crazed toddlers who can’t believe you’re actually letting them stay up this late! Keep in mind that people go ALL out, so some of the sights may be a bit much for little ones after dark. If you’re trick-or-treating with a younger crowd, the earlier you can go, the better.

When: Thursday, October, 31, 2019; anytime from around 5pm on!
Cost: Free
Ages: All ages
Costumes: Yes
Address: 1900 Block of Hanover Avenue – 2200 Block of Hanover Avenue, Richmond, VA
