MAMA CAMP is when one sibling goes to summer camp and the other hangs out with me all week long. We do fun activities that are geared completely towards the kid’s interests with none of the well-your-brother-loves-this-place-so-we’re-going-this-afternoon or you-pick-the-place-next-week-but-it’s-your-sister’s-turn-now.

My youngest was first up and thank you eight-pound-baby Jesus because older kids can understand their time will come on the calendar. Five-year-olds, on the other hand, tend to live in a moment where every day is Friday unless something goes wrong then it will be Monday forever.

I sat down the week before MAMA CAMP and scoured libraries and county announcements and park and recs and what time Build-A-Bear opened to plan my daughter’s and my week together. And 5 years old the best age for events because most are split into 3-5 or 5 and up. She could do it all, baby!

We went to one of three different craft and story times at the library.

No fear of glitter here.

We painted pottery, and I could pay attention to everything she wanted without my son’s background melody: I’M DONE

We built a bear.

We went way too often to Starbucks for pumpkin bread and chai lattes (respectively).

We never rushed anywhere so we could window shop or wander into stores and parks and playgrounds whenever it suited us.

We sat around the house and goofed off.

It’s hammock time!

We even scheduled her a date with my husband on his morning off, and on her request, they reenacted Harry Potter for two hours straight.

In other words, I created a camp where she felt known and heard and loved.

Her brother is already planning his camp with Chuck E. Cheese and bike rides and Pokemon battles, and we’re both so excited because while we love so many of the camps around town, we now have an all-time favorite: MAMA CAMP.

Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare are now offering three exciting opportunities for middle and high school students to learn about and perform Shakespeare. In March & April join Shakespearean instructors Thomas Cunningham and Jeffrey Cole for an INTRODUCTION TO SHAKESPEARE class at Richmond CenterStage. On April 7th and 8th they will be holding auditions for this summer’s FESTIVAL YOUNG COMPANY, who perform Shakespeare monologues and songs on the ground of Agecroft Hall during the Richmond Shakespeare Summer Festival and they are also introducing a SUMMER SHAKESPEARE CAMP in June and July.  This three week day camp will end with a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Camp Blue Sky at Rainbow Station.  Camp Blue Sky is divided into three divisions according to the ages of our campers. While each division is involved in our traditional day camp program, all of our activities are designed specifically to meet the developmental needs of the campers in each division. Within each division, campers are put into small groups based on age and gender.

Camp Alkulana. Camp Alkulana’s vision is to be a family that embodies the abounding love of God in a way that transforms the world around us.The camp has been in continuous operation since it began in 1915.

Camp Baker. Greater Richmond ARC’s Camp Baker is a full-service, handicap-equipped retreat facility located on 22 wooded acres near the Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Camp Baker supports children from age six through adults who have developmental disabilities.

Camp C.H.E.F. – Last year  and our Sophie House Camps helped to raise $1,000 in support of the Sophie House mission to provide supportive services for single mothers and their children. Campers will learn with  Chef Cathy and staff  about gardening, cooking with fresh “farm to table” ingredients, and table manners. Camp Diva Summer Retreat.  A five-week, full-day, rites of passage day camp for girls 11-15 years old (girls entering grades 6-9 in the fall). It is the only program in the Richmond Metropolitan area geared toward the growth and development of African-American girls.

Camp Easter Seals – When you come to Camp Easter Seals UCP, you will make lasting friendships and have the experience of a lifetime.  With options of 6 and 12 days we host the following sessions: Children & Young Adults (6-22 years old); Adult Sessions (22 and older); Family Camp (all ages- friends too); Performing Arts Camp (10 and up).

The Hamlet Project- Bard Unbound and Fireborn Films are proud to offer a unique and thrilling summer camp – part Shakespeare, part Hollywood, and all fun!  We are looking for student actors, age 13-19, who are interested in learning the art of film making as well as in acting in a Shakespeare play. Heart of Ireland. Our 4-day Irish dance camps will give your dancer a taste of both group and solo Irish dancing. Camps meet Monday to Thursday for 2 hours each day – in one week, your dancer will receive the equivalent of 8 weeks of classes! Beginners will learn the basics of soft shoe dancing and show off their skills at an end-of-week mini Feis on Thursday.  Campers in our Advanced Beginner/Intermediate camp will hone soft and hard shoe skills and work on drills and brush-up for the fall semester.

This camp, like last year, is organized by experienced players on the MLWGS Chess Team, and is further supported by advanced players from the Richmond Community. Passion Academy Frozen Summer Camp
Come enjoy a week to indulge and explore the music and characters of Disney’s “Frozen” in our Drama Camp.  They will learn diction and vocal projection, stage direction and presence, blocking, improvisational skills, participate in character studies of different “Frozen” characters/animals, and participate in sensory exercises to enhance their acting skills. This camp will conclude with an ensemble musical performance applying the skills the children have learned. Two week long camps in July.

Richmond Shakespeare and Henley Street Theatre Camps Explore the world of Shakespeare through scenes, monologues, stage combat, and performances. Spring and summer workshops and camps include: Introduction to Shakespeare; Festival Young Company; and Shakespeare Summer Camp. Give your child the opportunity to find the joy of studying and performing in a Shakespeare play in a low-pressure atmosphere. At the same time as they grapple with Shakespeare’s words and plots, they will gain an appreciation of the greatest dramatist in the English language. Taught by the experts at Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare.

Richmond Spiders Track & Field Camp.  Boys and Girls that will be attending 7th grade through 12th grade are welcome to attend this camp. If you are younger please call with inquiries.Campers will choose a primary and secondary event to learn the latest training and competition techniques. Coaches, guest speakers and staff will provide the athletes with the knowledge and skills to improve their performance.

Romp n’ Roll The officially-fun, officially-famous Romp n’ Roll Summer Camp is coming back to the Children’s Museum of Richmond! It will run weekly June 2 through August 15 at CMoR Central, Chesterfield and Short Pump for children ages 2-6 years (no potty training required). Our daily schedule is action-packed with “kid-tested, Rompy-approved” sessions including Gym, Art, and Music fun! It’s like a big kids’ camp on training wheels; all the fun, learning, and excitement but without the poison ivy!
Camp will be offered in the following sessions at all three CMoR locations:

• 5-Day Option: Monday through Friday 9am – noon
• 3-Day Option: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am – noon

And new this year — each camp day will have flexible drop-off and pick-up windows to accommodate busy summer schedules!
Camp Registration Fees for the 5-day option is $180 per week.  Camp Registration Fees for the 3-day option is $109.  Registration includes a nut-free snack and drink each day. A sibling discount of 15% off the 2nd child applies to both options.

Sabot Summer. A Sabot Summer is a series of one-week camps driven by the natural curiosity of children. Each summer workshop provides children, ages 4 – 8, with engaging opportunities for exploring and developing skills, sparking new ideas and interests as well as fostering imagination and enthusiasm for the world around them. A Sabot Summer honors the individuality of children and all their intelligences.

School of Rock For more than a decade, School of Rock has been inspiring kids of all ages to rock on stage and in life. Shakespeare Camp Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Students. June 23 – July 11: Monday – Friday 9am to 3pm. Performances: July 14 – 15. at 10am Students will work on text analysis; exploring Shakespeare’s characters through voice, movement and improvisational work; learn stage combat; and develop fundamental acting skills using classical theatre techniques. SkateNation Plus- Learn to SK8. The SkateNation Plus Learn to Sk8 Camp is an introductory camp for beginner to intermediate skaters ages 5-12.  Students will learn the fundamentals of ice skating using a variety of instructional programs that encourage participation at the recreational level.  Snacks and Lunch are included in the full day camp.

Shrine Mont Summer Camps. Registration is open. The Diocese of Virginia’s summer camp program at Shrine Mont promotes the emotional and spiritual development of children, youth, and young adults through the fostering of a safe and positive environment for all. It is the goal of this program to encourage the growth of relationships with self, others, and God.

SPARC summer camps. The School of Performing Arts in the Richmond community – SPARC – has provided incredible performing arts experience to students in the Richmond area for over 30 years. SPARC has full-day and half-day camps for students ages 4 to 18. Our summer camps are filled with singing, acting, dancing, friends and fun! Summer Camp Challenge – The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s FREE summer program where campers experience fun and games as they use reasoning to solve puzzles, crack clues and answer riddles about resources, innovation, entrepreneurship and prices.

Summer Investigators Science Camp. Summer Investigators Science Camp.  A real-life experience where girls will assume the roles of forensic investigators as they solve a mock crime. While using the school’s state of the art facilities, the campers will integrate activities in the areas of science, mathematics and computer technology. This is a 2 week boarding experience for girls in 6 – 8th grade.

Summer Triathlon Camp Hosted by the expert youth coaches at Endorphin Fitness, this camp will prepare kids between the ages of 5-14 years for the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls Youth Triathlon as well as any other youth triathlon. Tennis Camp – Making of  a Champion Camps. This camp provides a wonderful learning experience for beginner to intermediate tennis players. Join us this summer for Stage Explorers Camp at the Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn. In just two weeks your child will learn everything it takes to put on a show in a professional theatre. From singing, acting and dancing, to lights, sound and sets, and everything in between!  No audition is necessary for this fun-filled camp, full of exploration, investigation and imagination! Stage Explorers Summer Camp is for rising first through sixth graders.

Visual Arts Center of Richmond Summer ArtVenture Camp: Week-long studio art classes in a positive, nurturing learning environment. Each class provides focused attention on a specific media, skill or subject, and each week brings a selection of unique choices. All classes are taught by a professional artist and artists-educators who will help inspire and develop individual expression. Rehearsals held at our Huguenot Location Registration and Placement Class will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

Performance is on Saturday, August 24th, 2:00 pm at Henrico Theater

$300.00 includes rehearsals, performance attire, 2 tickets to performance, and T-shirt. Payment due at Registration

SUMMER REGISTRATION: Begins April 6th, 2013
