Real Richmond Review: Chesterfield County Fair

When we were trying to decide whether or not to take the kids to the county fair, Icouldn’t find a review of it.  So in case you’re in the same boat I was, here is your review!

We had a blast!

Our kids are ages 2 and 4.  We were worried that the costs would add up so we were leaning towards not going.  I went with the mindset – I only have $40 in my pocket and when it’s gone, it’s gone.  We live about 20 minutes away, and it was a straight shot down Courthouse Road.  I am so happy we decided to go!

Tickets were $8 for adults.  Kids under 5 are free.  I am not sure how much the ride tickets cost because we never bought any!  Everything we did was free of charge:

-A really neat BMX show where professional bikers and skaters showed off their skills.

-An awesome antique tractor display by the Chesterfield Tractor Club.  Seriously, there were about 20 tractors on display!  My son – the 2-year-old tractor enthusiast – was in heaven.  Also by the tractor display, you could go on a tractor ride (if you’re a ‘big kid’ or adult) or ride a little tractor train (little kids).

-A series of exhibitions that included show chickens (the kids loved it), art work and prize vegetables.

-A really wonderful model train that was clearly a favorite attraction!  Highlights included a long train with real steam coming out and a miniature carnival.

-We paid $1 to enter a quilt giveaway raffle.  At that table, my daughter got to make a rag necklace for free!  She loved it.

-The petting zoo area featured a zebra which the kids had never seen up close before.  Also, a very friendly yack, goats, sheep, a camel, a calf, lemurs and a porcupine.  To go in is free, but to feed the animals costs between $1-$5.

-There were also pony and camel rides ($5 and $6 respectively).

-To wrap it up, we caught the tail end of the Little Bear show.  It looked very cute and had a great messages about respecting wild animals.

All in all, we spent $19 and had a great time during the 2 hours we were there.  It was just the right size and it felt like a home-town family friendly event.  We didn’t even go in the ride area….  probably next year when the kids are older, but for an evening after work, we didn’t need to.  There was plenty to see and do without the rides – though they looked like fun!   To find out more about the events and shows featured at the Fair this year, visit http://chesterfieldcountyfair.org/.  It runs through September 1, 2012.
