This report, along with mounting research, makes a case that exposure to images in media and pop culture is creating a mental health crisis, as is evidenced by the steady increase in depression, low self-esteem and eating disorders in our children.
How can parents protect their kids in a hyper-sexualized culture? What’s the impact on children and their families? Are there best practices that parents can learn to open the lines of communication and talk to their kids about sexuality?
PARENTING IN AN OVER-SEXUALIZED WORLD is the next topic being presented at the RVA Parents Forum Series on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Richmond- Short Pump location.
Dr. Rosalie Corona, an Associate Professor of Psychology at VCU, Brantley Holmes, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner with Henrico County Department of Health, and Michelle Johnston, Commonwealth Parenting Educator, will address how to talk to your kids about sex in a non-judgmental, realistic manner.
“The key is open communication with your kids. Research indicates that teens who report having good conversations with their parents about sex are more likely to delay sexual activity,”said Liz Pearce, Director of Parent Engagement at Commonwealth Parenting and the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

If every child was breastfed within an hour of birth, given only breast milk for their first six months of life, and continued breastfeeding up to the age of two years, about 800,000 child lives would be saved every year.
-World Health Organization
Attending a latch on event isn’t about making a statement, it’s about, celebrating mothering, creating a community of support, meet other breastfeeding moms and getting yourself comfortable with breastfeeding too.
Breastfeeding mothers of all ages and nursing stages can meet at these two locations:
Midlothian’s Big Latch On
Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center
Saturday, August 2
at 9:30am – 11:30am
Starting in New Zealand in 2005, the Big Latch On continues to grow as communities join in. In 2013, 14,536 women and their children came together to breastfeed simultaneously during the Big Latch On.
The Big Latch On which kicks off World Breastfeeding Week which raises awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding the first 7 days in August every year.
Note: The Midlothian event is affiliated with the Big Latch On and attendees who latch on at 10:30am and breastfeed for one minute will be counted as apart of the global Big Latch On.
RVA! Latches On
Virgina State Capital Building
Saturday, August 2
at 10:00am – 11:00am
Now in its third year, RVA Latches On! has benefited from the support of all three Richmond area hospital systems: Bon Secours Richmond, HCA Richmond, and VCU Medical Center.
This event brings together breastfeeding mothers, their families and community advocates to highlight the critical importance of breastfeeding for the current and long-term health of our mothers and children by participating in a synchronized “latch on” at the Virginia State Capitol.
Note: This is not affiliated with the Big Latch On event and will hold an independent count of mothers who latch on without a requirement for duration.

When Breastfeeding Sucks 13 Things to Try
Stefanie and Karl Smith, who founded The Jack & Abby Neonatal Foundation, know all too well how things can go terribly wrong – they lost their beautiful twins due to premature birth.
The local March of Dimes is preparing for a fundraiser which will be a fun night of high heels and laughter, as they raise money to celebrate healthier babies — and help find ways to prevent premature birth. As parents, being a part of this important fundraiser is a privilege.
We can all help by donating to this worthy cause.
Crystal High Heel Award
The event in Richmond is scheduled for October 2, 2014. Ladies are competing as high heel models for the 2014 March of Dimes Crystal High Heel Award.
On October 2nd the women will walk the runway in one of two looks:
At the end of the night, the model who has raised the most money for the March of Dimes mission of stronger, healthier babies will be named the Crystal High Heel winner. This is a great way to help raise money for healthier babies and support an important cause.
Walk High Kate!
Richmond’s own Kate Hall, founder and previous owner of Richmondmom.com, is a model in this event. We are so excited to support her in this endeavor. Who better to show us all how to walk in high heels? Even though we know Kate is steady on her feet, we have to wonder if she might stumble and fall! But we’re sure she’ll be practicing in those heels plenty before the big event.
When asked why she was participating, Kate responded,
“I have several friends who have had preemies and benefited from the March of Dimes, so I’ve seen the help they provide first-hand. In fact, I met a few of these friends through a March of Dimes walk we had early-on in Richmondmom.com’s growth! Some of those families have lost their babies–which to most of us is unimaginable–and this is in memory of all of those sweet ones gone too soon, and to help save as many lives as possible.”
If you’d like to donate to this worthy cause for healthier babies, click here to support Kate Hall or any model of your choice. Mark your calendars for October 2 for a fun night and help babies too.
