When Breast Cancer Surgery is Not Enough

My friend walked into my office one day and broke down in tears, trembling uncontrollably. She had just been diagnosed with breast cancer and she felt hopeless and helpless. She knew she was facing a double-mastectomy and her body would be disfigured for the rest of her life. Rounds of radiation and other treatments were in her future, with little hope of surviving the disease for long. That was almost 30 years ago — but fortunately science and medicine have come a LONG way since then. There is much more hope, help, support, and reconstruction for women diagnosed with breast cancer today than ever before.

A diagnosis of breast cancer can be devastating to a woman. Even though there are many treatments and cures for many types of breast cancer, living with the physical changes after surgery and mastectomy often leads to depression, stress and anxiety for women. It’s not just the physical changes that make it difficult, but the emotional and psychological effects weigh heavy on a woman’s mind.

Breast cancer surgery is just the beginning. Fortunately, today’s multi-disciplinary medical team knows that breast cancer surgery in itself is not enough – treatment also includes an emphasis on reconstructive surgery. The Stony Point Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers help, hope, and a bright future for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. They fight the cancer and begin the reconstructive process all at the same time.

Stony Point Surgery Center’s oncologists, surgeons, diagnostic radiologists, and other physicians focus on the elimination and cure of breast cancer from the outset. They also work together in concert to manage every aspect of a woman’s health — creating a dynamic and effective multi-disciplinary team with a focus on helping every woman live the best life possible after breast cancer. That means working together from the point of diagnosis.

Emotional Side of Breast Cancer

Often, the emotional sides of breast cancer last long after the surgery to rid the body of cancer is complete. “The emotional components are just as serious as the oncology components,” according to physicians at the Stony Point Surgery Center. They recognize that women who feel poorly and negatively about their physical scars and loss are less likely to live a full and complete life. That’s why they work together to address the many aspects of emotional health as soon as a diagnosis is confirmed.

“Waking up after surgery knowing that the reconstructive process has already begun can make a huge difference in how a woman deals with her situation,” according to Dr. Gregory Lynam at Stony Point.  All of the doctors at Stony Point Surgery Center are sensitive to these emotional and physical concerns of women.

Reconstruction Begins During Treatment

Fortunately, more is known about breast cancer and reconstructive surgery today than ever before.  Once cancerous cells are removed and the disease is managed, augmenting the breast with these unique, specialized procedures is a key part of the healing process.  Dr. Clifford Lanier Deal III and Dr. Greggory Lynam of Stony Point Surgery Center perform oncoplastic breast surgery, which offers incredible hope and healing for women.

The Stony Point Surgery Center offers many more options for women today and no matter where a woman is in the process of dealing with breast cancer, the medical team can help. Women who undergo surgical procedures at Stony Point Surgery Center feel good about their treatment, cure, and how they look after a mastectomy or other surgical intervention.

The physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer go hand-in-hand and these physicians recognize the significance of dealing with both concerns in a compassionate, caring manner. Many women may actually look better after the reconstructive process than they did before the surgery.
