In an effort to clean out our ridiculous overstuffed toy cabinets, we rearranged tonight.
And in that rearranging, we found a game we hadn’t played in way too long, Apples to Apples.
For anyone who hasn’t played this game–recommended for Ages 12+–it’s a hilarious way to connect with the fam while trying to match card themes.
For example: Green card is “Firm” and those who are playing must choose the Red cards (in this case “Yoda” and “Battle of Waterloo”–waaa?) The goal is to match the red card as closely as possible to the meaning of the green card.
My ten-year old thinks this is absolutely hilarious, particularly because on this particular turn, he happens to be the judge. (Yes, he is younger than the recommended age. We are rule-breakers like that.)
And he has no idea what my card (The Battle of Waterloo) is (and honestly I can barely remember) and all he can think is “How cool is Yoda?” So he chooses Yoda as the card most closely matching the word, “firm.”
And I try to look upset with him for not choosing the Battle of Waterloo because it’s clearly more “firm” than “Yoda” but I can’t, because he’s cracking up and we’re all saying things like, “Funny this is” and “Well played, that was” and other Yoda-isms like “Kicking my butt, you are.” And this is why I love game night, and so cherish this laugh that I so desperately needed today (Colorado massacre, Penn State scandal, all hate in this world, be damned.)
At this moment: happy, I am.
