Primrose students and families are sharing their love of reading by donating books through their Og’s Bountiful Books program. They would like to see every child start a love affair with books.

Studies have shown that children first fall in love with books by having a special reading time at home every day. This bonding time builds shared memories, and is the single most influential way to positively impact your child’s literacy development and future success in school.

Here are some ways to nurture a love of books:

  • Before birth: Did you know it’s even good to read to unborn children? Research shows babies actually show a response to books that were read to them while they were in the womb. What better way to let a baby know she’s loved than to hear your voice as you read a book over and over again before birth? Your intonation and the cadence of your voice as you read will have a lasting effect.

  • Age 0–1: Make reading books part of your child’s bedtime routine. Children this age need sturdy board books that invite their participation. Hold your child in your lap as you read to make it a warm, snuggly and connecting part of your child’s day.

  • Age 1–3: You can captivate your toddler’s attention by making your reading dramatic. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to read the same book over and over every night. Children this age just seem to know they need that repetition to strengthen the connections they’re forming in their brains. After several repeats, your child will start chiming in on refrains and completing rhymes — proof his mind is growing!

  • Age 4–5: Preschoolers are ready to discover the magic of books for themselves. Go to the library together to “try on” different authors, and encourage your child to check out a variety of books.
