After reading Gabrielle Jones’ nomination for her aunt as a potential Rock Star of the month – we know why she submitted her nomination. Laurie Westbrook ROCKS and she is our Richmondmom.com 2013 February Rock Star of the month. We couldn’t say it any better than her devoted niece:
“My Aunt Laurie Westbrook is one of the most positive helpful people I know. Not too long ago in my English Class, I was asked to write a paper titled ‘Most Influential Person’. It was no doubt in my mind who I would write about. My Aunt Laurie and I are closer in age than she and my mother who is also her sister. She is like the older sister I never had. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and it was devastating to the family. She has always been there to help others when they needed help. Even when I was a little girl she enjoyed helping other and seeing others smile. She pursues the wonderful career as a social worker and to me she is underpaid. To her, she does not do it for the money but she does it for the enjoyment of helping people. She has made wonderful strides in her education and goes above and beyond to see that myself and other young adults accomplish their goals no matter how big or how small. To see her go through through the things she is going through right now is sad and unfair,” writes Gabrielle.
We learned a lot more about Laurie too:
- She is always giving back to the community in many ways!
- She volunteers with Bright Beginnings through the YMCA.
- She is coordinator for Worship in Pink at her church.
- She is always volunteering in community activities.
- Annually she works with Sisters in Motion to produce an SOL Pep Rally to motivate the students of Charles City County Elementary School.
- She currently serves as the Parent Support Rep for St. James’s Children’s Center in Richmond VA.
- She is a leader in the church, Speaking Spirits Ministries.
And according to Gabrielle, even with all of the wonderful community outreach, volunteer work, and support she offers to others, “Most of all she is a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend!”
