Yay for ice cream! July is National Ice Cream Month and what a great time to indulge in this creamy, frozen treat! And don’t miss the fun YummyFun Workshop and Ice Cream event at the Children’s Museum of Richmond on July 12, 2013.
In 1984, Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month is National Ice Cream Day. So Sunday, July 21, 2013 is the big day this year.
Until 1800, ice cream remained a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented. Manufacturing ice cream soon became an industry in America in 1851. Like other American industries, ice cream production increased because of technological innovations. Today’s total frozen dairy annual production in the United States is more than 1.6 billion gallons!
Everyone loves to celebrate with ice cream – from kids’ zany birthday parties, to elegant wedding receptions – ice cream is delicious.
To celebrate National Ice Cream month, try one of these ideas:
- Scoop up strawberry, vanilla, and blueberry for the perfect July 4th party of red/white/blue.
- Make your own ice cream sundaes at home with vanilla ice cream, fresh fruit, chocolate and caramel toppings, whipped cream, and cherries.
- Make an ice cream float with vanilla ice cream and root beer or sprite.
- Put your favorite flavor of ice cream between two chocolate graham crackers, freeze, and enjoy as a homemade ice cream sandwich.
- Create a special milkshake with ice cream, sprinkles and chocolate chips.
- Layer ice cream between thin layers of chocolate or vanilla cake, ice the cake and place back in the freezer for 2 hours or more. Enjoy an ice cream cake!
- Toast a frozen waffle, place a scoop of ice cream in the center, top with sprinkles and chocolate syrup.
- Crumble your favorite cookies in ice cream, mix well, and eat.
Have fun with ice cream in July – after all, it’s a national event!
