The 16th annual camp and summer programs resource event, Kidz Connection & Camp Fair hosted by Style Weekly, will be at the Children’s Museum of Richmond, central location on February 14, 2015.
Aside from just being a blast for families to attend and a fun (and FREE) day out, Richmond families will find great resources about kids’ activities and services; from camps and summer programs, doctors and family photographers, to entertainment for birthday parties and special events.

Great parks like Deep Run Park, Dorey Park, and Three Lakes where there are nature trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and lots more. Crump Park/Meadow Farm Museum has an historic house open for tours at various times throughout the week, and they have animals for the kids to enjoy – they offer lots of outdoor fun with plenty of room to run and play.
Henrico County Parks and Recreation (FREE)
Special summer events including puppet shows, magicians, musicians and theatre troupes are offered at facilities and parks throughout the county, see site for details. And don’t miss the free Open Gym for ages 10 and up. All skill levels are invited to play pickleball—a fun blend of tennis, table tennis, and badminton! The sport is played using a paddle and plastic wiffle ball on a badminton-sized court. Equipment provided. Tuesdays 5:30-8:30 p.m. Moody Middle School Tennis Courts. Henricus Historical Park in Chesterfield County (FREE)
Fun events for all ages.The recreated 1611 Citie of Henricus, an outdoor living history museum with 12 recreated colonial structures, demonstrates history through “hands-on” encounters with period dressed historical interpreters. Visitors interact with interpreters during which time visitors may be asked to assist with cooking, blacksmithing, planting or harvesting. Visitors may even be asked to join the Militia! Be ready for an exciting and provocative experience in living history! Events all summer.

Jamestown Settlement
This museum of 17th century Virginia history explores America’s first permanent English colony. See the replicas of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607. Other highlights include the colonists’ fort and Powhatan village. Kids will enjoy this fun tour of the “old days” – be sure and take a picnic to enjoy right by the waterside. National Battlefield Park (FREE)
Richmond was the scene of a number of battles during the Civil War, and National Battlefield Park encompasses 13 separate sites with four visitor centers along an 80 mile route through the City of Richmond, and Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield counties. Park admission is free. Visitor centers at Tredegar Iron Works (fee), Chimborazo and Cold Harbor are open daily. Visitor centers at Glendale and Fort Harrison are open daily June through August.
Pocahontas State Park (FREE)
Just 20 miles from downtown Richmond, Pocahontas offers boating, picnicking, camping, camping cabins, hiking, and interpretive and environmental education programs. The Aquatic Center offers seasonal water-based activities for the entire family. The park itself is free but there are parking fees.
Pottery Barn Book Club (FREE)
Stop by the store for story time every Tuesday from 11 – 11:30 a.m. (check with store near you to verify actual times). Something about January always makes me want to purge myself of all the old stuff (let’s be honest, Christmas actually has a lot to do with that). But before you donate or giveaway all your old maternity clothes, consider consigning them at Hip to be Round.
Hip to be Round is accepting gently used tops, bottoms, dresses, and diaper bags for consignment.
Here’s how the process works:
1. Sort through all your stuff:
Hip to be Round accepts tops, bottoms, dresses and diaper bags purchased from their store , Gap, Pea in the Pod, Loft, and any brands carried in their store (Japanese Weekend, Ripe, Lilac, Maternal America, Olian, etc.).
2. Call for an appointment:
Appointments generally take place between 10:30am and 5pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and 12:30pm and 4pm on Sundays and Mondays. Call 804-340-1700 for your appointment time.
3. Have all your clothes freshly laundered:
Your clothes don’t have to be pressed, but Hip to be Round does ask that all clothing is laundered within 7 days of your appointment date, even if you’ve washed them before. (Freshly laundered clothing sells faster than their attic-y friends.)
4. Go about your life, with nothing else to do, ever.
After your drop your clothing off at your appointment, your work is done!
That’s right, no calls for pick up, no need to check in. Hip to be Round knows you’re busy, that’s why they will send out checks to your home quarterly and in batches after the items have been sold, so there is no need to come by to pick it up. At the end of the season, all left over clothing will be donated to women-centered causes, so there’s no need to run by just to pick up an old tank top.
So get that bin out of your attic (or garage, or still taking up space in the back of your closet) and make a few extra bucks!

Great Wolf Lodge has teamed up with candy maker Just Born to create a gingerbread house to put all others to shame!! Over 5,000 candies decorate the life-sized house and 1,320 pounds of sugar was used – wow, talk about a sugar rush.
No, you can’t take a bite of it (delicious as it may look and smell) but you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner inside the cottage. There is a $10 entry fee to dine inside the gingerbread house, and the proceeds from your meal go to Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Of course, Great Wolf Lodge hasn’t stopped there. For those of you dreaming of a white Christmas, look no further than the Great Wolf Lobby where the forecast brings daily snowfall (where else can you play in the “snow” and ride a water slide in the same place?).
