Celebrate the first three digits of pi – 3.14 – on March 14 – also known as 3/14 with a day filled with a pi video and some pie science. In recognition of Pi Day, experiment with pies. Living Color: The Biological and Social Meaning of Skin Color. Science Museum of Virginia at 7 p.m. – Nina Jablonski, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Biological Anthropology at Penn State University speaks on the evolution of human skin and skin coloration — its biology, evolution and social function. FREE. Jablonski is a dynamic national speaker and author of “Skin: A Natural History,” which examines how human skin came to be and what it means for humanity. It’s due to land in August. Come see what our astronomers have to say about what Curiosity may find, what have we discovered about life on Mars in the past and the possibility of colonizing the red planet! Indoor Artwalk and Artist Reception Crossroads Art Center – During the Artwalk on Friday, March 16th 6pm – 9pm visitors will learn from the artists what inspires them to create their works of art as they stroll through the 20,000-square-foot facility. The Deep Run Marathon Dance, DRMD, is a student-run function whose endeavor is to raise money for non-profit organizations in the Richmond/Metropolitan area. With nearly 1000 students attending this 27-hour event, the goal of the students every year is to beat the previous year’s record; making the goal at least $162,000 this year. This event has progressed from a small dance in the high school gym to a philanthropic event that unites students, their families, friends, and the community. In its sixth year, the Marathon Dance has raised more than $612,000 for more than 70 different charitable organizations. The dance is March 16 and 17, 2012. The public is invited to attend.

The Most Historic Community in America History Hunt is designed to help make the case that Downtown Richmond, centered in Shockoe, is quite literally without question the most historic community in America. Learn about this most historic community with a walk & ride historical scavenger hunt. There will be two different history hunt paths – one highlighting Shockoe and the James riverfront, the other highlighting Court End and Capitol Square. Shamrock the Block Festival at Farmers’ Market is a stop on the Hunt.
KidWind Challenge – Cheer on middle and high school students competing in the first Virginia KidWind Challenge at the Science Museum of Virginia. Teams of two-four students will build powerful small-scale wind turbines, then put them to the test to discover whose turbine can generate the most electricity. The high school division competition starts at 9 am and the middle school competition is in the afternoon. Cash prizes are awarded to first, second and third place teams in each division and there is a special prize for the team that wins the Judge’s Award. Participants also tour the Virginia Tech Solar House and New Energy Virginia exhibits. The KidWind Challenge is sponsored by Dominion, Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, Alstom, Valley 25×25, Timmons Group, Invenergy, Science Museum of Virginia and Kid Wind.

This year, Maymont kicks off its celebration of the Japanese Garden’s 100th anniversary with a special photography contest running now through March 30.
UniverSoul Circus - The vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer.
