Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss - let's celebrate with green eggs and ham!

There are few things quite as enjoyable as reading to a grandchild.

“TV”.  If kids are entertained by these two letters, imagine the fun they’ll have with twenty-six.  Open your child’s imagination.  Open a book ~ Author Unknown

My two oldest grandchildren, Connor and Emma, have always loved books. They would climb up in my lap as toddlers with book in hand just waiting for me to read to them. Now, they are reading books themselves and it’s incredible to see how quickly they are learning and to listen to them read.

Connor’s kindergarten class is great and his teacher inspires him to read often. He loves going to the library or Barnes & Noble. Emma, in second grade, absolutely loves “chapter books” and she loves the library too. There’s no wonder that their mother volunteers in the library every other Monday at their school.

And that’s what makes life even more fun for me!

When my daughter is volunteering at the children’s school, I have the pleasure and privilege of spending time all alone with little Lily, who is now 20 months old. Just like her older brother and sister, Lily loves books. This past Monday, she came toddling to sit up in my lap with her over-sized book in hand. The book was almost as big as she was — and she made sure I didn’t skip a word or a page!

National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month and it all gets off to a great start on March 2, 2011 with the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.

This is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday so what better time to celebrate reading!

There are also lots of opportunities at the Children’s Museum of Richmond to celebrate National Reading Month too. Every day in March offers a chance for children to participate in a special story time and enjoy a visit from storybook characters such as Clifford The Big Red Dog, Super Why, The Saggy Baggy Elephant and more.

It’s also the perfect time to enjoy the Little Golden Books exhibit at the Central CMoR location.Exhibits and story time are included in admission.

If you’re looking for a real deal, visit CMoR Central on March 30, 2011 for just $.30 as they celebrate their 30th birthday.

Take time to read to a grandchild or child whenever possible, and remind them that March is National Reading Month. Children learn by watching adults and being a reading mentor is a wonderful privilege!

Richmond Rocks, by our own Richmondmom Kate Hall, is a great choice in books that entertains and educates children about the great places to explore in Richmond all at the same time! It makes a great gift for a grandchild.

And maybe it’s a good month to cook up some “green eggs and ham” for the kids too.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
