Hairspray! – Musical at 8:30 p.m. at the Dogwood Dell Festival of Arts.

VFMA Opening of “Mocha Dick” – 5:00 p.m. -Tristin Lowe’s sculpture Mocha Dick is a fifty-two-feet-long recreation of the real-life albino sperm whale that terrorized early 19th-century whaling vessels near Mocha Island in the South Pacific and inspired Herman Melville’s epic Moby-Dick (1851). Lowe worked with the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia to make the sculpture: a large-scale vinyl inflatable understructure sheathed in white industrial felt. Admission is free and it will be open July 23 – November 27, 2011.

Maymont’s Growing Up Green – Ages 4-5 learn about wild things – plants and animals. 9 a.m. – noon.

Summer Sounds at Stony Point Fashion Park -  Live music – check website for times and special information. Shop, stroll, dine and listen to great music.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – Saturday Short-takes from 1-4 p.m. in Art Ed Center for ages 5-12 (fee). Explore ceramic vessels, precious metalwork, and textiles representative of the religious customs, political structure, and daily lives of Meso, South American, and Native American indigenous cultures. Then return to the studio to build an original 3D object. Register online.

The Cartersville Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its first ever Hillbilly Raft Race to include three divisions: Tube ($10), Open ($15), and Canoe/Kayak ($20). We will also be having a festival on the land adjoining to the boat landing in Cartersville, Virginia. Admission is $5 per person over 12 years of age or $2 and a donation of two cans of food at the gate. All food donations will go to the Cumberland Food Bank. The festival will include two DJ’s, bluegrass music, children’s activities, food and fun for all ages.
