We saw this show during the preview, and could not. stop. laughing. Picture two handsome gents, one sophisticated, one just plain silly, a French cafe, beautiful women, and lots of money: this sets the scene for the scoundrels. Lawrence Jameson, played by Broadway actor Jeff McCarthy, is a suave, debonair skilled in the art of wooing women and skimming a little profit while he’s at it.
Freddy, played by Scott Wichmann, yearns to follow in Lawrence’s wayward footsteps and the hilarity that ensues along the way includes women, woe, and a little whodunitry involving one beautiful Christine Colgate, played by Rachel Abrams. Our favorite scene is one in which Lawrence has to shake loose a spunky and loony Oklahoma woman, Jolene. Jolene has her eyes squared on him for marriage, but when Lawrence inserts his insolent “little brother” tears made their way from my eyes from the laughter.
We also fell in love with Muriel, a sweet and saucy soul from Omaha played by Robin Arthur and the Frenchman Andre played by Joe Pabst, who create a few sexy and memorable scenes of their own. The costumes were like a rainbow’s burtst and the ensemble teeming with beautiful people who can dance (may I add) in fabulous high heels.
I took my mom and it was a perfect mom-daughter date night. If the man in your life loves theater, Scoundrels is a pretty darn safe bet for a fabulous night out, too.
One of Broadway’s newest and funniest musical comedies, Scoundrels is based on the classic film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Set on and around the breezy beaches of France, it is the free-wheeling story of two con men who try to out-con each other when they discover that the Riviera isn’t big enough for both of them. With a hot new score from the composer/lyricist of The Full Monty, Scoundrels will have you laughing yourself out of your seat, and dancing down the aisles. Suggested for ages 16+.
