We know that many local families and individuals are still dealing with issues and challenges caused by Hurricane Irene, including absence of electricity — and our thoughts are with them throughout this weekend.
After last weekend’s hurricane, we’re ready to celebrate this Labor Day weekend in a big way. There are plenty of new events, and some events from last weekend were postponed — you can enjoy them all over the holiday weekend – so be sure and check out the weekend family events calendar for details.

VMFA Faberge Exhibit - Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – In summer 2011, VMFA will feature the largest collection of Fabergé in the United States. The exhibition includes more than 500 objects and will be at VMFA through October 2. The Russian jeweler Karl Fabergé crafted objects for the Russian imperial family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including specially commissioned Easter eggs. VMFA’s collection, the largest public collection of Fabergé outside of Russia, includes five of the thirteen Russian imperial Easter eggs that are in the United States.

9th Annual Seafood Splash – Hurricane Irene has passed and our festival is on! Join us September 3 for the 9th Annual Seafood Splash. It features all you can eat crabs, fish, chicken and more. Music provided by DJ Drake, DJ Flava, DJ Stormin Norman,and DJ MG featuring “Let it Flow Band” straight from DC and hosted by DD Renee and Eric Sean of HOT100.9. Sky Watch at Pocahontas State Park - From 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. – Join in the fun with the Crewe Astronomy Club and enjoy a fun guided tour of the night sky and it’s all FREE. Maymont Park – Special Monday opening for Labor Day with indoor and outdoor exhibits, including Maymont Mansion and the Nature Center open for the holiday. Nature & Visitor Center 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Maymont Mansion 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m.
Rocketts Red Glare Fireworks – Rocketts Landing is ready to light up the Richmond skyline this Labor Day with the inaugural Rocketts Red Glare. A one-of-a-kind event, Rocketts Red Glare is the only place to see fireworks in Richmond on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5. The family-friendly event begins at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra will continue playing Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture during the fireworks, which are set to begin after sunset, around 9:15 p.m. Rocketts Red Glare is free for all ages and will take place along the banks of the James River at Rocketts Landing. Picnic baskets and beverages are welcome, along with chairs and blankets for seating.
