School is back in full swing most everywhere as we recover from the remnants of Hurricane Irene. The upcoming weekend is filled with family-friendly events – -including lots of opportunities to remember 9/11 and those who lost their lives, and those who risked their lives to save others.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – Faberge Revealed: In summer 2011, VMFA will feature the largest collection of Fabergé in the United States. The exhibition includes more than 500 objects and will be at VMFA July 9 – October 2. The Russian jeweler Karl Fabergé crafted objects for the Russian imperial family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including specially commissioned Easter eggs. VMFA’s collection, the largest public collection of Fabergé outside of Russia, includes five of the thirteen Russian imperial Easter eggs that are in the United States.

Melody Magic Music Studio is offering free classes from Sept 6th through 10th to celebrate their new studio location at 3041 Lauderdale Drive. Children ages 0-7 years, along with their parents, can attend a free Kindermusik class of their choice. You must reserve your spot before the fun begins! An American Turning Point: The Civil War in VA. Virginia stood at the center of a military and social revolution. How we define freedom, liberty, patriotism, and nation today is directly related to the diverse experiences of the individuals who participated in the Civil War. Using original objects, interactive technology, and state-of-the-art audiovisual programs, An American Turning Point. An American Turning Point is a signature program of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission. The exhibition opened at the Virginia Historical Society on February 4, 2011, and will travel to seven other Virginia museums from January 2012 through August 2015.

Saks and Qdoba – Mention “Cookies for Kids’ Cancer” at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Stony Point Fashion Park during a three-day period – Friday, September 9 through Sunday, September 11 – and the retailer will donate 10 percent of each sale to the cause. Similarly, all five Qdoba Mexican Grilles in the Richmond area will contribute $1.50 of every adult entrée with drink and $.50 of every kid’s meal purchased in the name of “Cookies for Kids’ Cancer” between 5 and 8 p.m. on September 10.

Grandparents Day: Ruckus on the River For ages 6-10 and 50 and older. Registration of a paying adult is required. Venture to Osborne Park to enjoy a fun-filled evening on the James River. Activities will include games, crafts, cooking, fishing, and more. All activities will be river-related. 9/11 Remembrance. VCU Libraries and its Friends of the Library present a program of commemorative installations and exhibits that offer opportunities for the community to reflect on the day of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. beginning with remarks from contributors. This program, including the opening talk and reception, is free and open to the public. Guests attending the opening reception are asked to register. The program explores September 11, 2001 before and after.

NASCAR Nationwide Series: VA 529 College Savings 250. Welcome to the Richmond Raceway Complex, which is located just outside of the city of Richmond in beautiful Henrico County. Visit the NASCAR Foundation to register as a volunteer to give out flags, collect money, and other things. You’ll receive a ticket to the 9/10 game and a t-shirt. This event is open to youth volunteers 12+ when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Cookies for Kids Cancer. After raising more than $35,000 in just 20 days in 2010 to become the highest-grossing bake sale in the history of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, Richmond-area organizers are excited to announce the 2011 City-Wide Bake Sale on Saturday, September 10. Proceeds will again benefit Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a national nonprofit founded by former Richmonder Gretchen Holt Witt that supports research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers. Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer. Remember all of those who lost their lives on this fateful day 10 years ago, and give thanks for the hundreds of brave men and women who risk their lives to help others.

A National Day of Service & RemembranceFull Circle Grief Center remembers as Americans around the country are dedicating this 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to remembering those who lost their lives on that terrible day.  Full Circle has joined the nationwide 9/11 Tribute Movement - please click here to find out more about this wonderful initiative and ways you can get involved.

HandsOnRVA 9/11 Tribute Projects – There are opportunities for hundreds of Richmond citizens to honor or remember 9/11 and prepare for emergencies. HandsOnGreater Richmond, The City of Richmond and other community groups are making it easy to find ways to join in. Fire Station 1 (Church Hill) and Station 17 (Forest Hill) are holding events for 9/11. Click here for more fire departments participating.

Carillon in Byrd Remembers. Volunteers are also encouraged to attend the Commemoration Event on Sunday morning at the Carillon in Byrd Park. The Commemoration will begin at 8:30am, with registration available for any open volunteer projects at that time. The service will include remarks from keynote speaker, Mayor Dwight C. Jones, and recognition of those who were impacted by 9/11, military personnel and first responders.

Sandra Beasley is at Chop Suey Books reading from her book, “Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales From an Allergic Life”. Insightful looks at living with allergies from someone who has dozens of allergies herself!

9-11 Commemorative Concert.  5pm-8pm. Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Rd., Chester, VA 23836.  The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a free concert by the Richmond Symphony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Parking is free, and light refreshments will be available for purchase. Bring chairs or blankets to sit on.
